Round 4 Honorable Mentions
Filed Under Star Trek KvP Contest
Great Moments in Round 4
For the last round I want to take a look at some of the moments that really caught my eye. These five scenes are certainly worth an honorable mention.
Some people turned their story frustrations into story fodder. These had me laughing so very hard.
GARY 7
Maybe this is just poetic justice.
PICARD
What are you even doing here? You were introduced in Round 3, for godsake. When do they ever announce a new character after the 2nd commercial break?

Andre’s Closing Thoughts
Filed Under Star Trek KvP Contest
It’s hard to believe we’ve finished our story – seems like we were just getting started!
Congratulations to mitchelledax for winning Round 4 with “A Good Day to Die.” The assignments became more challenging with each round, but you found a way to bring all of the story and character elements together into a dramatic and memorable conclusion. Great job!
I had no idea when we began this process where it would end up. I didn’t actually expect that you would choose the “Guardian” story, and I certainly had no idea how you would develop and execute it. But of course that’s been the most enjoyable aspect of the process for me. In every round, you came up with scenes that held my attention and surprised me – exactly what every good screenplay does. And I want everyone to understand that I’m not just talking about the winning scenes here. There were plenty of entries that didn’t make it to the finals that showed real imagination and talent. We never had a shortage of good work to choose from.
Everyone who entered the contest also deserves applause not just for doing the assignments, but for taking the risk of putting them on the web for other people to read and critique. One of the toughest things about being a writer is the fact that you when you publish your work in any form you’re putting a part of yourself in front of the public. That’s a pretty scary thing for most people, but everyone who submitted entries did it, and you deserve no small praise for that.
I hope we can do another Star Trek writing contest again soon. In the meantime, keep writing!

And Our Last Winner Is…
Filed Under Star Trek KvP Contest
Congratulations to mitchelledax for winning the fourth and final round of the Star Trek Kirk v Picard script writing contest with the aptly titled “A Good Day to Die.” In a kind of hybrid of TOS “City on the Edge of Forever” and TNG “Yesterday’s Enterprise” we see Picard sacrifice himself and his ship in order to preserve the timeline. And (as I predicted) it would take Guinan to talk him into it. Once Picard realised he was in the wrong timeline his fate was sealed, but mitchelldax still keeps both Captains doing what they do best right up to the end…this final moment between them is pitch perfect right down to the Picard’s uniform straightening (aka ‘Picard Manuever’)…
PICARD (straightens his jacket)
Well, Captain Kirk, it has been an honor to meet you. I wish that we could have met under better circumstances.KIRK (shaking his head)
No, it’s not over yet. We just need more time…PICARD
Sadly, it looks like time is not on our side. I wish that it were.KIRK
Given the time, I think that…we would have become friends. (Straightens formally) It has been an honor to serve with you, Captain Picard.
It is always hard to envision how a script will appear on screen, but this last moment on the Enterprise D is quite evocative… Read more

The Kirk v Picard fan writing contest is not the first meeting of Kirk and Picard. That honor goes to Star Trek Generations - the seventh feature film in the franchise. The film makers always planned to have both Kirk and Picard in the film in order to have a ‘handover’ from TOS to TNG in the feature films. However, they struggled for a while to find a premise that worked. Screenwriters Ron Moore and Brannon Braga wanted to find a way to bring the two captains into conflict, but they could not make it work. Moore (who just today was nominated for a writing Emmy) later lamented:
The best possible poster you could ever hope to have for this picture would show you the two Enterprises battling against each other. We all tried our best, but we were never able to come up with any scenario that made both crews look heroic. No matter how we played around with this thing, somebody was gonna come off looking like the bad guy.

I liked the way “A Good Day to Die” by mitchelledax focused on the idea of sacrifice, and the notion that some moments are so powerful they can have profound repercussions throughout the universe. “Safeguards” by dr.jean does a nice job of making Gary Seven an interesting and sympathetic villain.
“Eternity Too” by dragonwood had a nice closing moment. In “KvP_4a1″ by llap-terrell, Guinan makes some interesting and thoughtful observations about Picard and how he has “encountered” Kirk, metaphorically. “The Infinite Frontier (revised)” by ericsilvertree uses equal helpings of levity and temporal paradoxes to bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. Wheaton Shows His Range Again

Can’t get enough of Wil Wheaton acting out lines from KvP? Neither can we. Here is an Encore presentation of Wil Wheaton doing Kirk and Picard. Plus Wheaton got his wish (expressed in his previous ‘performance’) and got some Wesley dialog.

Wheaton’s Kirk is hilarious but he does need to work on his Picard. It is nice to see that 20 years later he still has his Wesley!

“The Ship!”
In the KvP contest the fate of Kirk’s ship seems to be in danger…and we know that Kirk loves his ship!. In the world of Star Trek, the ships are as much a character as any of the show stars. The ship so often seems to on the mind of the characters, but have you ever wondered how many times they referred to ‘the ship’ in all the movies? Well some guy on YouTube decided to count…every time. He also counted references to ‘computer’ as well as ’source or sauce’ (apparently this is an in joke with the YouTubers friends…just go with it)

Meet Round 3 Winner cvalin
The winning scene for round 3 of the KvP contest “The End of Eternity” was written by Christopher V. (aka cvalin). Christopher is a history and government teacher in Southern California who also works as a comic book artist and writer, as well as a musician. Chris was kind enough to give us some time to provide some insight into his writing.
How much of a Trekkie are you:
I’ve been a Star Trek fan since I was in first grade and started rushing home from school every day to watch the repeats of the Original Series. I’ve enjoyed all the series and films since then.

Get To Know Gary Seven
Like the Guardian, Gary Seven is one of Trek’s most beloved characters who only appeared in a single episode “Assignment Earth.” Gary Seven is a time traveler who was brought up on an alien world, but he is human. His ancestors were taken from the Earth around 4,000 B.C. by a group called ‘The Aegis.’ Not much is known about the Aegis except that they seem to have a totally opposite prime directive than the Federation. They send agents around the galaxy to interfere, apparently to help ensure peace. Gary is a supervisor agent (Supervisor 194) for the Aegis. In “Assignment: Earth” Gary’s mission was to travel to Earth in 1968 (in the midst of the Cold War) and assist in the sabotage a test of a nuclear missile (filling in for two other agents who had disappeared). He succeeded and it resulted in the nuclear powers rethinking using orbiting nuclear platforms and escalating the cold war.

On To Scene 4
Filed Under Star Trek KvP Contest
The winner of the first round has been announced…it is “The End of Eternity” by cvalin. This scene is a continuity cornucopia. Not only does it bring in the character’s of Gary Seven and Guinan, but it also ties into a number of episodes from both TOS and TNG. Most notably are “Time’s Arrow” (TNG), “City on the Edge of Forever” (TOS), “Assignment, Earth” (TOS), and “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (TNG). Plus it really finally ramped up the Kirk and Picard tension leading to great Kirk v Picard moment with the captains trading barbs over the viewscreen. This scene has really thrown a lot of balls up into the air that are certain to prove challenging for writers to juggle in round 4.
